About Me

Dr. Karns is a sports medicine specialist with a clinical focus on cartilage restoration, ACL surgery and the arthroscopic treatment of orthopaedic pathology affecting the hip, knee, and shoulder.

After traveling to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine for medical school, he returnedto the region to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency training at UH Case Medical Center, now UH Cleveland Medical Center. Fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine took him the to University of Utah Hospital where he had the opportunity to take care of PAC12 and NBA athletes. During his fellowship, Dr. Karns served as an Assistant NBA Team Physician for the UtahJazz and Assistant Team Physcian for the University of Utah Utes.

While taking care of high level athletes is a passion, he approaches each patient individually with their goals in mind in order achieve optimal outcomes. In addition to practicing cutting edge sports orthopedics, he is dedicated to training future physicians and works closely with training medical students, orthopaedic residents and fellows and serves as the Associate Residency Directorand Sports Fellowship Director for UH Cleveland Medical Center. He has been actively involved in research throughout his medical career and has published numerous scientific articles in the areas of hip, shoulder, and knee reconstruction and continues to actively publish and present research at national and international scientific meetings.

Karns Family

Dr. Karns has deep ties to Northeast Ohio and to University Hospitals. From growing up in Concord, OH playing hockey at Lake Catholic High School to having the privilege to serve his hometown community serving patients in Cleveland’s Eastside communities, performing surgery at the UH Geauga Medical, UH Richmond Medical Center, and UH Mentor Surgery Center and seeing patients at the UH health centers in Mayfield Village, Mentor and Geauga.

He serves also as an Assistant Team Physician for the Cleveland Browns and the Lake Erie Monsters and is the head team physician for Berkshire Highschool.

Dr. Karns is excited to continue to deepen his roots in Northeast Ohio, serving the local community, while enjoying time with his family. He also enjoys on his free time skiing, fishing, and being an avid Cleveland sports fan.
